Bathroom Microbes–and More–for NPR

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 5.50.57 PM“Don’t lick the bathroom floor.” It’s good advice. Especially when coming from an environmental microbiologist who has spent months studying public bathrooms.

I got to cover the resulting icky research for NPR.

But it’s not all bad, say the researchers. They found that the microbes on different bathroom surfaces were, of course, largely influenced by human use. But those communities settled into a surprisingly steady makeup within hours. And that could be good news for health.

Still, says the environmental microbiologist, “It’s good to have good hygiene.”
